Chapter 23

WHEN ALEX reappeared a short while later, she was immersed in the large bath, up to her chin in bubbles, her hair piled in wild disarray on top of her head.

"You have a hard time listening to anything I say, don't you," he scolded in mock seriousness, stalking over to the bath, and depositing the plate of food and two goblets of a pale blue liquid on the ledge. "Move over!"

He settled in beside her, then reached behind them and touched the computer panel. The lights dimmed and the ceiling panels above them slid noiselessly open to the night sky. Chilly air rushed in through the opening. Joanna looked up in awe to see, immediately overhead, the largest of the moons shining directly into the room.

She sneezed suddenly.

"Too cold?"

"No, the bubbles just tickled my nose."

Alex chuckled. "How about some music." He touched another button, and the same haunting music that had played in the sleeping chamber echoed softly around the room. "And a massage." He caught her completely off guard and she squealed and jumped when the bath began to vibrate and pulses of water caught her in a sensitive spot. He grinned knowingly and gave her a wicked leer. Wrinkling her nose at him, she adjusted her position carefully, and leaned her head back with a sigh of pleasure.

Alex picked up the plate and offered it to her, a pleased expression crossing his face at her exclamation of surprise. "Where did all this come from?"

"I ordered it from the Marketplace earlier today." As they ate, he explained the various delicacies he had selected. The food was delicious, rich and varied in taste. When they had both had enough to eat, he put his arm around her waist and held her close against his side as they sipped at the ambrosia. Joanna broke the comfortable silence a few minutes later.

"Alex?"

"Hmm?" he murmured lazily above her head.

She almost forgot what she wanted to tell him. The pale blue liquid swirling in her goblet fascinated her. It was creating the most exquisite patterns. Ignoring the danger of the topic, she asked dreamily, "Why isn't anyone allowed to go outside the perimeter without an escort? I know you said your teams had to explore the area to make sure it was secure, but hasn't that been done by now?"

Beside her, she felt Alex tense. Too sated with pleasure to feel much concern, she was nevertheless vaguely aware of his exasperation when he said, "Don't you ever pay attention to your security bulletins?"

"What security bulletins?" She tipped her head up.

His reply was slow in coming. He seemed to be momentarily distracted by something in the vicinity of her chest. "The ones you're required to review every time you sign on to an information console."

"Oh! Oh, I never look at those," Joanna confessed carelessly. "I never have the time."

Alex groaned. "That would explain a lot! If you had been paying attention, you would know that something tried to breach the perimeter the night of the reception.
